Writing can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure what the “right” way is. After 48 novels and a lot of trial and error, I’ve learned that a successful writing career is built through curiosity, consistency, and a willingness to experiment. And you can absolutely create one too.
Here’s what I’ve learned after over a dozen years in publishing…
Find your writing process. There’s no one-size-fits-all method for becoming a writer. Most of us start out trying everyone else’s approach. Personally, I think that’s a great place to begin. Why do all the work? Testing different methods will help you uncover your own writing process, creative workflow, and story development style.
Learn from the people who went first. When I wrote my debut novel Tempting the Billionaire back in 2013, I learned everything I could from editors, classes, and other successful published authors. I read books, attended conferences, and worked closely with my agent to learn how to write a synopsis, back cover copy, and a sellable manuscript. I trusted these voices, but I also made what they taught me work in my own writing life.
Experiment like it’s your job. Because it is. Trying new tools for character development, plot structure, or drafting is the only way to know what truly works for you. Some things won’t gel, but others will sing tuning-fork true in your gut. Keep what feels good. Release what doesn’t.
Build your writer’s toolbox. Over the years, I created character motivation worksheets, character snapshots, and other templates* that I use for each and every book I write. A solid set of writing tools, story templates, and repeatable systems is invaluable when you are planning on writing more than one book. Planning ahead makes drafting go smoother, working with your editor simple, and gives you the confidence of writing a clean draft.

Journal your way through the messy middle. I love journaling! Writing down my thoughts is my way of checking in with myself. I can access deeper layers of my plot, fine-tune my character’s emotions, and avoid burnout. It’s why, in my Write for Fun program, many of the video lessons include journaling prompts. Journaling is one of the best tools for both personal growth and storytelling I’ve found.
Stay organized so creativity can flow. As you draft and revise, the files pile up. Keeping folders for each book, each draft, teasers, and notes creates a simple, supportive organization system for writers. This frees your mind to focus on the story instead of searching for lost files.
